are conspiracy theories the symptoms of a paranoid mind, or a thoughtful one?
Posted by admin as conspiracy theories
whether the government is watching us, man never laid foot on the moon, assassinations take place as part of a grand scheme, or we all are part of the matrix….
what kind of minds devise and act upon conspiracy theories? when is it useful or beneficial to theorize outside the box? does sharing a conspiracy theory make it stronger, or weaker? must there always be a "they"?
Just a thought experiment here, but my hunch is that the formation of conspiracy theories is probably similar to the formation of religion, or other concepts or beliefs that attempt to explain the world and give the world greater meaning and coherence — a coherence even when presented with facts that show otherwise.
For example, the murder of John F Kennedy…people were simply not willing to accept that this great man was murdered by a lone gunmen…as the writer Norman Mailer described the assassination, "the Gods were at war and a God fell", believing that JFK was killed by some powerful conspiracy…
Same thing with the 9 11 conspiracies…can't blame it on some inconsequential men or a guy in a cave…has to be something "grand" and big…the allure of the grand narrative…
The point is the lone gunman, or lone nut leads to uncertainty about who the enemy is…can the enemy be one of us?…can evil just be random and destroy beautiful people or creations (buildings)…
As an aside., religious thought, *I think*, can be much the same way as well, but on cosmic scale…
I like your follow up questions more than the title of the question lol …unfortunately by revealing and posing the conspiracy , it usually doesn't lose its credibility since conspiratorialist will conclude that any corrections to theory are — you guessed it — just part of the conspiracy.
And I really think you nailed in on the head…to conspiratorialist, there always has to be a "them"…but not just a "them" but a THEM, a powerful secret cabal…they need the world to fit like a jigsaw puzzle, coherent…we the little people versus THEM…
That's why you very rarely find conspiratorialists who believe in just one conspiracy…its either all or none, seemingly
By the way, we are necessarily painting broad brush strokes, there are other things that feed conspiracy theories, like anti-authoritianism, etc.

Just becuase I AM paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me.

Could be. Most people don't believe in conspiracy theories because the thought of living in a world where such things exists scares them, and we all know not believing something is the best defense! Anyway… I'm sure some are paranoid, but at the same time things that could be considered conspiracy theories are true and have happened. And yes, there has to be a 'they' because the whole thing about conspiracy theories is that they are abstract and vague… which it what the apparent 'they' want them to be, if known at all. Knowing who 'they' are, is the end of the rope for whoever initiated the event (what ever that is, assassination or what have you)

There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. When one sees bad things happening all around, it's not hard to envision what COULD happen next. Over thinking is a symptom of a chemical imbalance or mental illness, and can be treated.

Thinking outside of the box is all well and good, but paranoia is not conducive to critical thinking. And most conspiracy theories have more than a touch of paranoia.
To be paranoid requires a big ego. You have to think *you* are important enough for "them" to spend huge amounts of money and time to track you.
Paranoia is looking at a situation where pretty much everyone disagrees with you, and concluding that is due to a conspiracy. It never crosses your mind that you might actually be *wrong.*
Paranoia assumes that "they" are perfectly organized, and can orchestrate successful frauds on a mass scale.
A paranoid can take random coincidences and spin invisible connections to them, building a whole new conspiracy theory at the drop of a hat.

Lived with a paranoid for way too long.
Nearly every crime involves a conspiracy. The government/media tried to convince people that JFK was assassinated by a lone assassin. However, nearly every crime involves more than one person, so that is the thoughtful and reasonable assumption. The 9/11 event was clearly a conspiracy, but it just a question of whose conspiracy theory do you believe.
Our media and institutions are setup to extinguish thought outside the box. A significant media figure will quickly lose his or her position if they tread in the wrong place. That doesn't stop great intellectuals like MIT linguist Noam Chomsky from understanding the big picture and describing reality.
After 9/11/2001, when I witnessed the demolition of WTC1, WTC2, and WTC7, and the media described this as "collapses", I suddenly realized that the media is in lock step and has become a slick propaganda mechanism far more effective than any in history.
An effective propaganda machine persuades people that their message is not propaganda. Turn off your TVs and look to foreign news sites for more perspectives.
We still have a free Internet, but that will not last long.
